Sebastian Borkhardt

Sebastian Borkhardt is a research associate at the documenta archiv in Kassel. Previously, he held a position in the Department of Art History at Justus Liebig University Giessen. From 2018 to 2021, he worked on several exhibition projects at the Staatliche Kunsthalle [State Art Gallery] in Karlsruhe. His research interests include European modernism, reception history, human-animal studies, and the history of documenta. Together with Isabel Wünsche and Tanja Malycheva, he edited the 2017 issue of Experiment: A Journal of Russian Culture (“In Memoriam: Dmitry Vladimirovich Sarabyanov”), based on a selection of papers from the Third Graduate Workshop of the Russian(?) Art and Culture Group. His PhD dissertation “Der Russe Kandinsky” [“The Russian Kandinsky”], published in 2021, examines the significance of Wassily Kandinsky’s Russian origins for his reception in Germany between 1912 and 1945. Sebastian is a founding member of the Russian(?) Art & Culture Group.
